Spreading Joy on Two Wheels: A Heartwarming Holiday Tradition
Article By Renee Osborne
On December 12th, we had the privilege of assisting the Sheriff’s Honor Farm in distributing over 175 bikes to children in our community. Kids from all over the county arrived to pick up their bikes, their faces lighting up with smiles from ear to ear.
To make the day even more festive, the Foundation Board of Directors teamed up with Dolly’s Donuts, Mama Ganache, and Tech Bunnies to provide donuts, hot chocolate, and cheerful cups and napkins. The San Luis Obispo County Health Department was also on hand to ensure every child had a properly fitted helmet, emphasizing safety alongside the excitement.
This incredible bike program has been a cornerstone of our community for over 35 years. Thanks to the generosity of organizations like Rita’s Rainbows—which donated $3,000 in Bruce Hamilton’s name toward new helmets—Bike SLO, The SLO Bike Club, the Sandlot group of San Luis Obispo, San Luis Garbage, and countless community members, this valuable initiative continues to grow and exceed expectations each year.
This year was particularly special, as Del Mar Elementary participated in the bike program for the first time. Additionally, Morro Bay PD partnered with the Sheriff’s Office to deliver bikes to twelve children in Morro Bay, ensuring they received an extra special gift this holiday season. Seeing the pure joy on these children’s faces is a reminder of why this program matters so much.
If you’re considering donating to a meaningful cause, we encourage you to support the bike program. Contributions can be made any time of the year through this link. Every donation, no matter the amount, helps bring smiles to children in our community and keeps this impactful tradition alive.
